Our Mission
Sustainable Agriculture for Food Security (SAFS) is a nonprofit organization focused on making improvements in sustainable agriculture, access to clean water, health, sanitation, and education in low-income communities.
Currently the organization includes members and volunteers in The United States and Sierra Leone, specialized in agriculture and research, sustainable development, technology, manufacturing, project management, and community empowerment.
Sustainable Agriculture for Food Security (SAFS) was first formed by developmental oriented citizens of the United States with the primary aim of working within the agricultural sector, helping to eradicate hunger and alleviate poverty among farming communities.
Sustainable Agriculture for Food Security (SAFS) supports community and individual farming with the goal of helping to increase profitable farm income, promote environmental stewardship, and enhance quality of life for farm families and communities. The organization started its agricultural work in rice farming in Sierra Leone, which is the leading farming activity there.
70% of households in Sierra Leone are engaged in agricultural activities including crops, livestock, fisheries, and forestry. But face challenges and major constraints due to a lack of modern agricultural tools and equipment, post-harvest facilities, and adequate funds to sustain agricultural production and productivity. Sustainable Agriculture for Food Security (SAFS) supports community and individual farming in Sierra Leone by providing financial aid, seedlings, farming equipment, and technical training to farmers. And while SAFS initially began its work in addressing the problems in agriculture and food security, SAFS has now extended the organizations' focus and aim to also address concerns in the areas of water, health, sanitation, and education. SAFS does recognize how these issues are directly tied to each other and are all critical to address.
Water is the basis of all life on Earth. Without water, agriculture, and hence food production, would not be possible. Safe and sufficient water facilitates the practice of hygiene, which is a key measure to prevent not only diarrhea diseases, but acute respiratory infections and numerous neglected tropical diseases. - World Health Organization. With children particularly at risk from water-related diseases, access to improved sources of water can result in better health, and therefore better school attendance, with positive longer-term consequences for their lives.
Our Goal Is to Improve the standard of life of people in our communities through Agriculture

Children who go to school in Sierra Leone have great difficulty accessing proper sanitation. This severely damages their health, as it causes dysentery, cholera, and other diseases. The problem is more severe in rural areas due to deficient water supply systems, inadequate sanitation, and little knowledge about hygiene practices. .
This is affecting children attending schools because they have to walk sometimes, half a mile or a mile to get drinking and cooking water from the streams.
